security are telling us that two of these students had contact with dzhokhar tsarnaev, may have been roommates with dzhokhar tsarnaev. and at this point they're saying officials of firsthand knowledge are saying they are new bedford students, they'd been arrested on charges of making false statements and also conspiracy to obstruct justice directly in connection with the case of the boston marathon bombings. these were dzhokhar tsarnaev's roommates, apparently. the third suspect -- or the third person who's been arrested in this case and possibly facing the charges at the federal courthouse later today is also a student, but we are being told that it is not kathrine russell. it's not katy russell, the widow of tamerlan tsarnaev, the older brother who died in the shoout with police the night before his brother was taken into custody. dzhokhar tsarnaev's roommates had apparently, wolf, detained for quite some time now, several days on immigration violation charges, which surprised some of us just in the fact that investigators had plenty of time to hold these two students if they wante

. and now the focus is on a landfill, and it's close to the campus that the suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev attended. investigators are combing it for a laptop that could be in there, and they believe dzhokhar's laptop could be there and have more information about the planning and execution of the attack. pamela brown joins me now from outside the prison hospital where dzhokhar is being treated, and that's in deven. thank you for joining us. what can you tell us about the search for the computer this morning? what do we know at this point? >> reporter: well, poppy, what we know is that investigators in hazmat suits are still searching the landfill. we learned from a u.s. law enforcement officials that the leads to that search actually came from not only the suspect himself, dzhokhar tsarnaev, but also others who may know about the whereabouts of that laptop, those that may have disposed of it after the bombing at the boston marathon. but, then, authorities searching for the laptop in the hrapb feel in bedford, massachusetts. >> and it's said that authorities found out others may have helpe

suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. the explosion killed three people and injured more than 200. the 19-year-old has been charged with crimes. the older brother was killed in a gunfight with police. for the latest, let's cross over to washington. what more can you tell us about these new arrests? >> you said a lot already. we don't have a lot of information, but the charges of been made public. we know that two of them -- the three who are to appear in court in about 30 minutes in boston were probably from kazakhstan. azamat tazhayakov and dias kadyrbayev are their names. they are the ones charged with obstruction of justice. they are the ones who evidently removed a backpack and laptop from the dorm room of dzhokhar tsarnaev. first of all, a backpack with fireworks, second of all, a laptop. computers all -- are always an important piece of evidence. a third man, robel phillipos, is charged with making false statements. he apparently tried to cover up the whereabouts of dzhokhar tsarnaev in the beginning. he seems to have turned around and is cooperating with the authorities. this is complet

, as you just laid out, they're accused of taking that backpack out of dzhokhar tsarnaev's room, the backpack that had fireworks and vaseline and school papers and tossing it into a trash bag and into a dumpster and then lying about the entire thing to investigators. their attorneys say they didn't knowingly lie and didn't know any of that stuff was evidence in an investigation. they look forward to litigating this in court, erin. >> one interesting thing in the complaint, anyone that wants to read it, it's here. there is a footnote, brian that, says that the friends have actually while eating a meal with dzhokhar had discussed bomb making and at that one month prior to the marathon bombing, i'm reading from the footnote on page 11, dzhokhar explained to them that he knew how to make a bomb. what do you make of that? >> that's right. that is a very important footnote. the attorneys for the suspects say they had no prior knowledge of a plot. there is nothing at all to indicate that they were in any way part of any plot to bomb the boston marathon or had any knowledge of it prior

, investigators spent another day at this landfill, near dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room is and he was spotted after the bombings. earlier this week, cnn learned they were there scouring for receipts at the landfill. this time looking for his laptop. meantime, tsarnaev is in a federal prison camp, after a week spent at the hospital as many of the victims he was accused of moving. he was moved to a facility that holds detainees that need medical care. law enforcement official says tsarnaev's condition is improving and he is now able to sit up and write. all of this as his parents left their home in dagestan for another part of russia. his father abandoning plans to come to the u.s., saying his trip is delayed indefinitely. susan candiotti, live in massachusetts where dzhokhar tsarnaev is being held now. susan, what is happening with the boat that dzhokhar used as his backyard hideout during the manhunt? >> reporter: hi, don. you and i were talking about this one week ago tonight. at that time, the fbi was still working on collecting evidence from that boat. now we understand as of yesterday that work

marathon bombing investigation. the three were roommates of dzhokhar tsarnaev. we have more details from nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. and joining us from boston, nbc news investigative correspondent michael isikoff. pete, first to you, on the three suspects and what we believe their connection is, and the possible charges. >> well, we should emphasize that authorities say there's no indication, none whatsoever that any of these three had anything to do with the bombing. what they're accused of doing is taking some things action some items that belonged to dzhokhar tsarnaev, throwing them away, and then denying that they did that when the fbi questioned them about it. now, two of these people are here from student visas from kazakhstan. the third is a united states citizen. we don't have that person's name. they were already in hot water with immigration authorities, because they were here on student visas, and the requirement is that you stay in school and study, but they were under investigation for not attending classes. they had been living in an apartment in new bedf
. that's where suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev went to school. investigators are searching for a laptop, which could provide more information about the planning and execution of the attack. our panel joins me now outside of the prison where she is being treated. pamela, thank you, good morning. talk to me first about the search in the land fill for this laptop computer. >> reporter: well, poppy, this is the third day investigators will be searching that land fill, looking for what is believed to be dzhokhar tsarnaev's laptop, with some critical information to help with the investigation. we are told by sources that they were tipped off not only from the suspect had himself, but also from people who had been questioned in this investigation who may know his whereabouts and may have helped in disposing of that laptop after the april 15th bombings at the boston marathon. again, investigators want to find this laptop, because they do believe that the information on it will help them in this investigation. this is the latest in an ongoing investigation, we are told, by sources they are still follow

him in, that's what a government official told cnn about a friend of dzhokhar tsarnaev that was allowed to enter the country on a previously approve ed visa. there's just one problem. that kid was no longer a student. so as you look at this case and you hear about these student visas and one of the students had already flurgeged out of college. what does this tell you about our student visa system and what remains wrong with it? >> one thing you can see about the student visa programs and the analysis of it is that since 9/11 there has been increased scrutiny on who comes into the country on a student visa and what happens with them. the problem is there are so many moving pieces and how do you know which ones are responsible and tied to what happened and which ones weren't. in this case, the focus has to remain on the people who committed the crime itself and the individual being charged with the bombing. yes, you can say there should have been somebody kept out. in a perfect world that would have been the case. we are still an open society. it is hard to condemn this
used by dzhokhar tsarnaev. from russia, the fbi has gotten new information on the suspect's mother. phil black is live in moscow this morning. hello, phil, what are we learning? >> poppy, good morning. we have been told that russian authorities intercepted a communication between the bombing suspect's mother and one of the bombing suspects and we are told this not by russian authorities but a u.s. official who showed them to be discussing jihad. this was intercepted back in 2011 but only made available to the fbi in the last few days. the context here. we know back in 2011, russian authorities asked the fbi to investigate tamerlan tsarnaev and his mother because of concerns of radical. they didn't find any information to suggest they were a threat. they went back to ask more questions and they say they didn't hear anything back. we know this interceptor communication was recorded at roughly that same time frame. it does, at the very least, raise an interesting question. that is, had the fbi known about this intercept at the time, could it have altered the way that investigation was

awaiting details from proceedings inside. three college friends of dzhokhar tsarnaev have just been charged. two with conspiracy to obstruct justice. another for making false statements. the friends allegedly removing items from dzhokhar's dorm room and then denying it. the detailed complaint unsealed just a short time ago alleges, quote, knowingly destroying, concealing and covering up objects belonging to dzhokhar tsarnaev, namely a backpack containing fireworks and a laptop computer, with the intent to impede, obstruct and influence the criminal investigation of the marathon bombings. the court released this photo of the contents of the backpack's contents, including fireworks emptied of their powder. the two primary suspects, die yas kadyrbayev and azamat are seen in this photo with dzhokhar in times square. according to chilling details in the complaint, on the day that the bombing suspects' photos were released to the public, quote, kadyrbayev then texted tsarnaev and told him that he looked like the suspect on television. tsarnaev's return text contained, "lol," and other things kady
